I work as a haematologist at CION Cancer Clinics in Ameerpet. A haematologist is a specialist in diseases of the blood and bone marrow. My day-to-day work centres on blood cancers like leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, along with non-cancer blood disorders such as anaemia and platelet problems. Blood cancers behave differently from solid tumours, so they need someone who sees them regularly.

A blood cancer diagnosis is not settled by a single blood test. I confirm the exact type only after putting three things together: the bone marrow examination, flow cytometry, and the cytogenetic or molecular testing. In leukaemia the right treatment changes completely depending on the subtype, so I will not start a medicine until that subtype is clear.

I do not rush toward a bone marrow transplant. I look at the type of disease and its genetics, the patient's age and overall fitness, and how the disease has responded to chemotherapy before I decide whether a transplant is genuinely the right step. It is not the answer in every case, and when it is not needed I will say so plainly.

I speak honestly with families. I tell you how much a treatment is likely to help and what its limits are, because giving false hope is not fair to a patient.
